VM Ware – Expanding a Disk and Extending a Boot Partition

I needed to make a virtual disk, with boot partition, larger.  I found that I could use the VM Ware Server utility, vmware-vdiskmanager.exe, to expand the disk:

C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Server>vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -x 20Gb “<path>\<name>.vmdk”

Next I needed to extent the partition.  There was only one partition, the boot partition, and that meant that I could not be booted into that OS to extend the partition to fill the disk.  I tried for far too long to use NTFSDOS and diskpart to get the job done.  In the end I realized that the easiest thing to do was configure a second guest OS to mount the drive with partition needing to be extended.  From this other guest OS I was able to use diskpart to extend the book partition:

Diskpart.exe

LIST VOLUME

SELECT VOLUME #

EXTEND
